A true diamond in the pantheon of French progressive rock, Skryvania’s sole album that was released in 1978 is currently the scene’s most expensive artefact, with copies selling for over 3000 euros (if found). The album’s musical merit is hardly contestable. Although largely composed in the typically French symphonic prog vein, it is no stranger to hard prog and psychedelia, with fuzzed out guitar solos in constant dialogue with escalating moog assaults. This largely instrumental album was originally released on the DIY label DMR (Philippe de Magnée Recordings, the group’s producer and mentor) in 300 copies, as the band wanted its heritage to circulate among a select few. This is the first vinyl reissue ever since 1978, remastered straight from the original tapes, courtesy of the original label owner whose funding of this album was a catalyst and indispensable condition for its release, in exactly the same mindset, that is, 300 copies (hand-numbered). And if you like the album, you will enjoy even more the bonus CD where you can experience salvaged soundboard recordings from Skryvania’s rare live performances during their short-lived existence (1977/78), recorded by Philippe de Magnée who was also the band’s sound engineer at their live performances. The reissue is couched in the original album artwork (not featured in subsequent CD editions), and includes a 2-page insert with the band’s official biography, as well as previously unreleased live and studio photos.

In this case, you can guess the music from the band’s name, a regression into the depths of the unconscious (Freud’s antecedent term for ID in the structure of the cunning invention called ‘psyche’) via an interminable sonic evocation. The highlights of the album are the 2 long parts of the homonymous track covering most of the 2 sides. Although the prog progression at the beginning of Where Are We G...

RIALZU biography

RIALZU biography by Gilles Renne (Rialzu) and Alain Lebon (Soleil Zeuhl)   It was during the rebirth of the Corsican Independence movement that the only record of RIALZU appeared. RIALZU, a band whose musical adventure plunges me back into the far-away and almost ghostly universe of my youth.   RIALZU was created in the early 1970’s at the peak of an incredible musical effervescence : many bands, soon to become legends, were breaking musical taboos and adventuring onto virgin territories by mixing musical styles with incredible creativity and thus laying the new foundations of music yet to be. It was in this atmosphere that, as a teenager, I began teaching myself to play the guitar by trying to decipher the magical notes of my ‘guitar heroes’ from their albums. I met Christophe Mac Daniel, a young organist from Corsica, at a Jesuit boarding school in Avignon. Together we took our first musical steps by starting up a band (of ever-changing names) with two other...

A testament to its members’ musical virtuosity, including Steve Robshaw’s outstanding guitar-playing skills, flutework and violin, Paul Todd on soprano saxophone and Howard Scarr’s expertise wit...
