After Mirthrandir, Lift and Easter Island, we continue bringing you the cream of the crop from U.S. Prog Classics, with the reissue of ID’s 1977 album Where Are We Going. In this case, you can guess the music from the band’s name, a regression into the depths of the unconscious (Freud’s antecedent term for ID in the structure of the cunning invention called ‘psyche’) via an interminable sonic evocation. The highlights of the album are the 2 long parts of the homonymous track covering most of the 2 sides. Although the prog progression at the beginning of Where Are We Going foregrounds more constrained expectations, it is very far from the ensuing impulsive excretions from the unconscious that deliver the ego from its neurotic constraints. Alternating between a kraut-isch bass-driven funeral march that might be effortlessly tagged as the precursor of Krautrock from Hell by Electric Orange and fuzzed-out mayhemic guitar soloing, reminiscent of the best moments from Terry Brooks & Strange’s debut, while intricately interwoven with keyboards and lifted to SFX heaven via echo and delay, this condensed and displaced (in line with the operations that are responsible for transforming the presumed and retroactively causative latent text of the unconscious to a manifest one) far cry of existential despair sits comfortably next to psychedelic classics such as C.A Quintet’s Trip Thru Hell and Kimio Mizutani’s Path Through Haze. The social uses and abuses of metaphor are plenty, especially as regards the use of in-group overcoded visual metaphors that are intended as undercoded for an out-group. Metaphor is both ontogenetically constitutive of and for the reality principle, to the same same extent that violently repetitive over/undercoded representations exceed symbolically crystallized representations of violence, responsible for (re)configuring aspects-of-seeing, as well as for concretizing abstract concepts. It runs freely in the multimodal prison house of linguistic carrions. However, its omnipotence is also marked by a downside. Thanks to the inherent operation of catachresis (that is, embezzlement of sociolinguistic power) whereby live metaphors die, thus giving birth to literal meaning, they can also be used before dying as reified phantasms for animating beliefs, dogmas and morals, as well as causes for undertaking social action, either collectively or individually. All it takes is a perfectly legitimate belief structure (for mass delusions to become instituted), expressed while performing the principle of seriousness, the co-operation maxim, preferably looking stiff in a panic state of mauvaise foi and ressentiment while fleeing from the long-abandoned dream for a zero-degree state of the social (currently revived in the context of pre-modernist ‘morals and dogmas’): The contribution of metaphor and metonymy to delusions

Political ideologies rank among the vilest forms of popular discourse responsible for shaping personal/collective identities, their morals and axiologies. They are marked by a fundamental anxiety at abnegating becoming, and a dogged defense mechanism against the irreducibly situational empirical self. They survive mostly as abstract axiological schemata with fuzzy tenets informing social action, while their probative value is evinced at its highest in oral speech dominated settings, as orality favors impression management, syllogistic simplicity and short-term memory. Oral speech works best for hiding salient facets of a topic under the presumptuous metaphysics of self-presence. But this is the least of the concerns when it comes to contaminating and polarizing public sentiment with political discourse. Some of the most tantalizing psychopathological aspects that have been highlighted in scholarly research concern the cultivation of masochistic identification with powerful ‘representatives’, biological and social determinism, the precarious fixation on sedimented metanarratives via a regression to premodernist ideals (even Medievalist) that run through a sociocultural unconscious while bypassing any genealogical scrutiny, moralizing streams of thought that underlie an elitist crypto-currency as befits cults & sects, and much more as lucidly laid out in The Psychopathology of Political Ideologies

What is that that when it is, it does not appear and when it appears it is not? You guessed right, not a secret society, but an overt society with secrets, a shadow without its wanderer, a seer without his vision, a secret baboon with 24 imprinted on the front of his t-shirt, a present absence and an absent presence. Unpacking secrets in an analytical situation is a sine qua non for psychoanalysis. This applies to a micro, as well as macro, cultural terrain, and justifies why the psychoanalysis of culture is more pertinent than ever in an era of advanced simulation and simulacra, deep fakes and fake truths, and their correlates in hiddenness, i.e. fake secrets. Secrecy as a condition of sociality, over and above petty family secrets that make up the immediate vicinity of analytical situations, is conducive to mass paranoia, as (sub)alternative interpretations are destined to flounder against the bedrock of an undeclared demand for postponing its unveiling. Paranoia is not the probabilistic outcome of an ontically bound apocalypse, but of the internally contradictory impossibility of presencing of the by definition ineffable lethic component in the ever transposing dialectical movement of a-letheia. In short, paranoia is the fundamental psychic correlate of the symbolic order of the metaphysics of presence that underpin sociality and its inscription in circular subjectivities, as promulgated thanatographically by overt societies with secrets. The star-system occasionally comes under fire for comprising an army of narcissistic egomaniacs. Major mistake, very ill-thought, but also ill-founded. Freud originally furnished a crucial distinction between primary and secondary narcissism. The former is responsible for retaining the integrity of the ego as such, therefore it applies to everyone. Then, were it not for the collective narcissism of an identifiable group of polar attractors, existential despair and derivative (social) pathological states by the rest would be at their highest. Of course, there are also non-artistically inclined (i.e. actors, musicians, street dancers) hellbillies who are still mirroring each other in rules of etiquette and a collective habitus that perpetuates the culture of collective narcissism. But this is just a matter of social mobility, self-enclosed societies and their supporters. Wonderland is a staple piece in literary fiction. It has also inspired a plethora of psychedelic artists, unfortunately due to its appropriation by a drug culture. That notwithstanding, its underlying motifs and problematizations are more contemporary than ever in a geopolitical post-ideological micro-fascist semiotic regime where every bozo has been legitimated by hidden agents of social change to perform social positioning based on a constrained palette of colors that stand for fuzzy and idiotsyncractically malleable schemata. This is obsessive-compulsive homeostasis at its most grotesque (which is why it is aesthetically performed). And why not? Since the social is sustained anyway on a tacit - unconscious - agreement (sic) about the meaning of language games and their concatenation rules in ordinary interaction ritual chains, nothing prevents the patron saint of a multidisciplinary intelligentsia to design them (and send updates on iphones). The only thing that is effaced in the process is the motivational structure of inventio that is mythopoetically carried over to monads as autopoetically individuated ontogenesis, in between somnambulist suggestibility and conscious decision-making to participate. Apart from evidently inscribing all of the rhetorical operations of the Freudian Dreamwork (see previous post in this series), most eminently Alice highlights the arbitrariness of any symbolic order and the irreducible singularity of the Imaginary or their interplay in transitional stages from the latter to the former. Shape-shifting, re-ordering, neologisms, miscommunication, symbolic roles re-allocation make up Carroll’s recurrent expressive inventory. But thanks to the omnivorous machinery of the Same, imaginary signifiers are introjected anew into the symbolic. Even worse, they are posited as symbols of the imaginary. Wherever mimetic desire reigns supreme, the collective unconscious is structured not like a language, but like lynching. The master signifier for that unifying drive is called ‘sacred’ (short for there is nothing to see here, so we glossed it over with a lexeme that literally signifies nothing) and its praxiological correlate ‘violence’. Sacred violence is hard-wired in community settings that are informed by a religious sentiment. Commemorative occasions of that tacit social contract like mass prayers after mass-shootings constitute solid proof. As the receiver of these enunciative moments cannot take the call, the horror show is compelled to repeat itself.  Surely Rortyan pragmatism can account for such phenomena, it’s a chicken-egg thing: first comes the will to reappropriate assets by self-interested community members, and then the unconscious drive for repeating the sacrificial structure that underpins the foundation of a social order. Or not. In ancient times it was customary to offer virgins. As they became increasingly hard to find, the ‘sacred’ custom shifted to immanent laws. As Zizek said, the sacrificial subject is guilty precisely because of its innocence which pretty much explains how so many “records” disappear by the magic wankatanka of the secret services.  Either way, this delicious cultural logic thanks to the dominant mode of oppositional thinking is translated into two segments, and only two`: the hunters and the hunted. They also tend to change hats sadomasochistically, in line with the seductively reversible logic of clean/unclean. Collecting as cultural practice is laden with an unfathomable range of meanings. The same holds for psychoanalytic approaches to collecting in general and record collecting in particular. The collector’s profile is marked almost invariably by an unconscious desire for mastery over the many uncertainties that tantalize existence, by resorting to a simulacrum of closure. Each act of collecting and every single artefact essentially constitute part-objects that furnish provisional satisfaction in an impossible quest: of saturating the demand of the Other placed on the subject. Fleeting satisfaction is by necessity coupled with melancholia emanating from the irrecuperable object of desire, an instance where the definite article always fails to adequately describe the object that slides beneath it. Hence, collecting may be said to amount to a spectral satisfaction from a non-object. Of course, this is just one way of looking at it. You may as well consider each collecting act as an irreducible point of no return, either to an underlying master narrative or to a reductionist rhetoric of loss and negative dialectics (and the list of pejorative pathologizing namedropping extends ad infinitum, up until and including the Bone collector). The naively realist approach that follows the path to restoring a subject to a pre-selected part of a symbolic order or the cryogenics of re-presentationalism (let’s forget that not all interest groups and individuals share the same symbolic order), even more savagely and crudely invested with ‘health’ connotations (that simply conflate death with vitalism- not at all surprisingly wherever dogmatic reasoning performs its colonial plan), is not even worth the laughter. The narratological prong that is pretty much standard in serious social research is indubitably more promising, and demonstrably a contested terrain. However, what is occasionally obliterated in strictly textually oriented analyses is the causative role of co-text and context in shaping certain speech-acts at the exclusion of others. And causality has many faces: remote causes, concurrent causes, sufficient, efficient and necessary, counterfactuals and unobservables. Take, for example, the experimental conditions of the MK Ultra watersports, still practiced today remotely thanks to satellite-operated technologies (too many to cite here), without the need for presence in special state-funded blackops facilities. Experimental subjects who are asked questions pursuant to long periods of sleep deprivation and feeding with psychotropic drugs surely must give ‘unconsciously’ motivated answers and formulate elliptical sentences akin to those emitted during masonic orgies or by white(washed) trash as they are making rounds while a Baphomet effigy, lost as they are in their collective imaginary. Visiocentric communications bypass the radar of conscious processing and register directly at a preconscious level, prior to morphing into macropropositional structures in long-term memory as a structural unconscious (yes, visual rhetoric has the ability to translate automatically into verbal content). This is why metaphorical discourse, double-entendres, zoosemiotics and bodyparts-signalling are so important in maintaining the fabric of secret societies, deep states, but also in liquidating subjectivities in transitional states between cultural regimes (or parallel social universes comprised of co-existing imaginary and symbolic structures).  In cases of socially construed maximum entropy, subjects become split via conflicting visual, but also multimodal and preferably (for blanketing purposes) inter-semiotic feedback, emanating from multiple sources, both significant and insignificant others. These cases constitute programmed schizoid personalities. One too many, mass psychosis ensues (and the attendant moral panics that aid in reverting to ancien regime ideologies). Never minding solipsistic discourses that are recruited ex post facto for reversing the causal nexus from sociocentric to ego-leptic, schizoid subjects are recognized (i.e. self-referentially recruited for confirming the deductive validity of contingent major premises, turned into ‘analytical categories’ legitimated by biopower politics) by randomly posited symptoms such as emotional detachment, regression into fantasy-worlds and other ill-founded and intuitively (fuzzily) framed ‘categories’ (that is, straight-out insults reimagined most probably through Procrustean institutional interdiscursive complicity, and most likely by obliterating variables of magnitude, frequency, context, etc.- it doesn’t take more than a prerehearsed rhetorical economy of generically couched potatoes, really). Thanks to the by now also dominant social constructionist perspective (under fire from an intelligentsia working for the ‘new’ biopower regime towards a new social realism- well, the investment must pay off at the ‘end of days’), the process or programming schizoid subjects may be laid bare quite lucidly, prior to turning a descriptive account into a canonical blueprint for watersports. It’s even entertaining for useless eaters: you randomly assign a string of symptoms to an umbrella ‘psychic state’, then work backwards towards orchestrating the social situations and social scripts for fleshing them out. Typical Donquixotist self-referential feedback loops, also applicable in legal cases, i.e. starting from typified clauses and then staging the empirical evidence. Reprogramming populations and/or specific segments to re-evaluate possessions and assets is demonstrably coupled with recruiting all sorts of conceptual frameworks and interpretive accounts. Reductionist accounts that approach assets from as expansionist points of view as possible are usually preferred. Anything will do the populist job of relativizing as yet unchallenged common places about fundamental concepts that constitute common currency in ordinary parlance and axiologies, whether it is Appadurai’s The Social Value of Things or Heidegger’s What is a Thing? or typically antiquated Marxist terms such as ‘commodity’ (and its offshoots). Zombie imagery has been proliferating in popular culture over the years. They recognize humans from their fear-of-death which obviously they don’t share as they’re already dead. They do not seek food to live, as they do not share such a need either. The zombie automata are driven solely by the necessity to annihilate the living. They emit inarticulate sounds as they approach, as free-flowing desire is aphasic, incoherently (schizophrenically) resonating from the substance of the plane of content, and by implication pre-symbolic and pre-imaginary. They do not wage war on territorialized ground, simply succumbing to the death drive of returning all life to the status of inanimate matter.  But this is not a case of a nihilistic ideology animating zombies. On the contrary, it is a case of laying bare in repeated acts of devouring lookalikes that any symbolic order is ironically premised on dead representations. Not at all surprisingly, some cults are instituted on orgiastic rites of passage that restore and reboot subjects to an incoherent continuity of Being. Anything can be resemiotized after… that. Zombies are simply attracted to the Negative, to restore it to pure unbounded positivity. In this respect, not only they are not posthuman, but as human as humanity can get: a wake-up call without an expectation for awakening (nothing to do after the orgy). This Deleuzian take on unconscious desire, not determined by Lacanian lack and the Other, but as pre-individuated pure positivity tinged with Nietzschean overtones, nomadic and not monadic, is an attestation to the sheer force of unfettered desire prior to the pigeon-holing of symbolic will-to-power (and everything that takes place in between), an ode to greed off-the-grid. Stephen King’s cinematic rendition of the Freudian ID in the form of the visual metaphor of Pennywise the Clown in It, is best understood through Freud’s theory of the unconscious, and particularly with regard to repressed desires, traumatic experiences and the vicissitudes of instincts. As an incarnation of id’s modus operandi, Pennywise represents the Freudian uncanny, something simultaneously familiar and horrifying, rooted in the unconscious. Insofar as the language of the unconscious thrives with condensed and displaced metaphors and metonymies, Pennywise has been endowed with the power of changing shapes and figures, morphing into a leper, a headless boy, or a terrifying painting in dreamlike sequences that bend customary spatiotemporal arrangements. As a vivid portrayal of the agency of the unconscious, he always returns to feed on subjects’ traumas and fears, a repetitive pattern that is affirmative of the principle ‘where the id was, the ego shall be’. Wherever symmetrical information fails, projective identification saves the day. And what a way to peacefully manage unfulfilled desires potentially becoming behaviorally manifested as aggression: all it takes is a regression back to the imaginary and a first-person utterance that speaks for an entire social network. In this manner, the distribution of power in social networks is effaced, while the subject of the utterance feels empowered for projectively identifying with a leading persona and a collective will. Dominant discourses, of any possible bent, thrive on silencing all questioning about methods of knowledge and information production. Since dialogism is bound to be more or less prone to conferring casualties, the easy peripheral route to this end is the use of taboo words as anchors (heavily promoted by mambo-medical professions and popular films). Paranoia is one of them. Literally pointing simply to alternative interpretations of the same phenomena as regards causes and traits, some are regarded as valid by some sociocultural groups and at the same time as outright false by others.
